Cartridge Filter Maintenance

Problem
Cause 
Remedy

Pool water not sufficiently clean
Pool chemistry not adequate to inhibit algae growth.Obstruction in suction line to pump.

Dirty cartridge.

Inadequate turnover rate.
Maintain pool chemistry or consult pool service technician.

Clean cartridge. Use chemical cleaning of cartridge if necessary.

Run system for longer time or consult dealer or pool service technician.

High filter pressure
Dirty cartridge.

Partially closed valve or restriction in return.
Clean cartridge. Use chemical cleaning of cartridge if necessary.

Open valve or remove obstruction in return line.

Short cycles
Dirty cartridge.

Pool chemistry not adequate to inhibit algae growth.

Flow rate too high.
Clean cartridge. Use chemical cleaning of cartridge if necessary.

Maintain pool chemistry or consult pool service technician.

Restrict flow to capacity of filter (see filter label)

Dirt returning to pool
Cartridge element not properly located on center pipe.

Cartridge element ruptured.

Air strainer on cap assembly is damaged or missing.
Check element for proper location.

Ensure that cartridge is installed properly. Check for breaks in polyester material. Replace if necessary.

Replace air strainer.

Leakage at clamp
Improperly tightened clamp.


Dirt or contamination.



Damaged or cut O-Ring.
Shut off pump, relieve tank pressure, open air bleeder. Tighten clamp properly.

Shut off pump, relieve tank pressure, open air bleeder. Remove tank top and clean O-Ring sealing surfaces. Reassemble tank properly.

Same as above except replace O-Ring.

Return flow to pool diminished, low filter pressure
Obstruction in pump hair and lint strainer.


Obstruction in pump.


Obstruction in suction line to pump.

 
Clean basket in strainer.


Disassemble and clean pump.


Clean skimmer basket. Remove obstruction in lines. Open valves in suction line.
