6 Easy Sauna Exercises

Yes, the point of a sauna is to work up a sweat even if you’re sitting still. However, you can improve blood flow, deepen your relaxation, and come out of your sauna feeling rejuvenated by adding a few easy sauna exercises to your sauna time.

Hamstring Stretch

Place a towel on the seat of your sauna, sit down and stretch your legs out in front of you. Keep your back straight and try to touch your toes. Hold for 15 seconds, sit up, take a deep breath, and repeat.

Fly Stretch

With your arms up and your palms up, stretch out your arms and then sweep them to the side of your body like you’re making a snow angel. Inhale while you lower your arms, then exhale as you return your arms to the starting position.

Calf Stretch

Stand on your tiptoes and hold for a count of two. Do this a few times every time you’re in the sauna, and slowly build until you can do more. It’s a great way to strengthen your calves and tone your legs.

Circle Stretch

Rotate your arms in small, tight circles. To work all of your muscles, rotate your arms five times forward and five times backward. Repeat as needed. You can do this exercise while you’re sitting or standing in your sauna.

Neck Stretch

Sit or stand with your back perfectly straight and roll your neck. Push your chin into your chest and then slowly roll your head to the right. Hold it for 5 seconds. Exhale, and then roll your head to the left. Repeat as necessary to help prevent stiff neck.

Shrug Stretch

If you have a job that requires you to sit at a desk, shrugging your shoulders is a great form of exercise. Bring your shoulders up towards your ears, and then push them down as far as you can. Repeat throughout the day, and shrug your shoulders during your sauna time as well.

An Important Note

Before you exercise in your sauna – even if it’s simple stretching exercises – check with your doctor. Keep your session to no more than 20 minutes, stop if you feel dizzy, and make sure you drink plenty of water before, during, and after your sauna time.
