5 Tips to Prep Your Vinyl Spa Cover for Winter

Knowing your spa is protected for the winter is almost as relaxing as time actually spent in your hot tub. However, when was the last time you checked your spa cover? Your cover is the only line of defense between your spa and frigid temperatures that are just around the corner. Consider these 5 tips to prep your vinyl spa cover for winter.

Clean It

Before freezing temperatures hit, use a water hose to remove dirt and debris from the top of the cover, then wipe it down with a clean cloth. Repeat until it’s clean. If necessary, use a non-abrasive cleaner, but be sure to rinse it thoroughly.

Condition It

Vinyl can dry out during harsh, dry winter weather. Just like you would apply sunscreen to your skin to protect it from sun damage, you need to protect your vinyl spa cover. Use a product designed specifically for vinyl spa covers because a generic product like Armor All actually makes your cover dry out more quickly.

Clear It

When there is snow and ice here in the Las Cruces area, make some time to clear it off the top of your vinyl cover. Use a soft broom to gently brush it off onto the ground. Never use a shovel or a rake, because that could permanently damage the cover.

Care for It

Most vinyl spa covers can withstand freezing temperatures, but you still need to be gentle. Don’t try to stretch the straps and handles when it’s cold outside or it could cause the cover to crack.

Secure It

Make sure your vinyl spa cover is securely locked into place, especially if there’s a winter storm coming in. If you live in an area that gets extremely high winds, you might consider wind straps.
