Before you can install a hot tub, you’ll need to determine the location and dimensions. It’s important to understand the height of your new hot tub and the best site so you can carefully examine and consider the best option for entering and exiting the hot tub safely and securely.
Here are a few things you should know and think through before you buy.
What is the Standard Height
Although most hot tubs measure around 36 inches high, there is no standard height. The average hot tub is approximately 34 – 42 inches tall. Anything over that is typically measured a custom tub, otherwise considered too high. That’s not to be confused with an inground spa, suited for taller individuals, and usually installed in the ground next to a pool.
Height & Depth Difference
Because the depth of the hot tub is different from the height of the hot tub, please don’t get them confused. The height measures the distance from the bottom of the hot tub to the outside edge of the exterior wall, whereas, the depth measures the depth of the water. The average hot tub has walls that extend 5 – 6 inches above the water line, adding a little extra height. For example, a 36 -inch tub has a depth of 31 inches and a 42 -inch tub has a depth of 37.5 -inches.
Things to Consider
The average hot tub does not require steps for entering or exiting; however, a 42- inch hot tub will require steps for children and smaller sized adults. Otherwise, they will have to climb over the wall and risk injury. With that in mind, many tub owners prefer steps for easy access in and out of the hot tub. There are two types of steps, those the same height or 7-inches below the top of the spa. Steps the same height or slightly lower provides the easiest and safest access in and out of the spa water. However, the other type requires you to step over the wall to enter or exit the hot tub.
The majority of hot tub owners purchase an in-ground or above ground spa for relaxing and soaking. So, it’s not surprising in-ground hot tubs are also limited in height. Most in-ground hot tubs will have a depth of 31 -inches in height, and a maximum of around 37 -inches. Because of safety issues, it’s not recommended to go any deeper. Whether in-ground or above ground, all hot tubers need to use extreme caution so not to accidentally slip beneath the water.
