A hot tub is a fun and healthy addition to your home. It brings so many health benefits, like stress-relief, improved cardiovascular health, and pain-relief, not to mention the benefits of quality time spent with your loved ones. To enjoy your hot tub worry-free, keep in mind these basic safety rules.
The Longer the Soak, the Cooler the Water
You may love the heat of a 104° F soak, but at that temperature, you should only stay in the water for about 15 minutes. If you want to soak longer, turn the temperature to a cooler setting.
Consult your Doctor
The hydrotherapeutic benefits of soaking in a spa are beneficial to people with many conditions. However, in some instances using a hot tub isn’t recommended. If you’re pregnant, have heart disease, low or high blood pressure, or diabetes, we recommend you consult your doctor to see if soaking in a hot tub is a good idea.
Keep Your Head Above Water
The drains and pumps create suction, and though modern hot tubs have safety features to help minimize the danger, we recommend you take extra precautions to avoid hair becoming tangled in a drain. To be safe, style long hair up and keep your head above water.
Balance the Water Often
Your skin will complain if you fail to keep your water clean and balanced! Test it at least weekly and balance it for a clean, comfortable soak.
Avoid Dehydration
The heat of a soak in your hot tub is dehydrating so make sure you’re replenishing with lots of water after your soak. It’s also a good idea to keep a bottle of water or juice nearby to stay hydrated while soaking.
Follow These Safety Tips when Soaking with Kids
Spending time with your kids or grandkids in the spa is a great way to get in some quality family time! To confidently hot tub with kids, follow these rules:
- Kids older than 5 years old only. Kids have a harder time handling hot water so skip the soak for infants and toddlers up to 5 years of age.
- Turn down the temperature. Even older kids are more sensitive to hot water than adults. To be safe, turn the heat down to 98℉ to 102℉ max. Let kids soak for 5-20 minutes at a time, depending on their age and the temperature of the water.
- Kids need to be tall enough to stand in the bottom with their head above water. Just like for adults, long hair should be worn up and they should keep their heads above water.
- Keep kids hydrated. Make sure kids get plenty of water during and after their soak.
- Avoid full body immersion. Instead of standing in the bottom or fully immersing, it’s recommended that you have kids sit on benches and seats to keep part of their bodies in cooler air.
- Don’t let kids soak alone. Your kids or grandchildren should only be in the hot tub if you’re also in the hot tub.
