Can You Put a Hot Tub on Grass?

When you’re shopping for your first hot tub, you have a lot of questions. When it comes to picking the site and preparing your yard to install a spa, you may be wondering what kind of foundation your new hot tub needs. Do you need a concrete slab? Can you put a hot tub on grass? We’re here to answer all your questions, every step of the way. Here’s what you need to know about installing on a hot tub on grass.

Hot Tubs Need a Stable Surface

When you combine the hot tub, the weight of the water, and the bathers inside, you’re looking at a weight of 5,000 pounds or more! That makes it vital to place your hot tub on a stable foundation. The grass won’t work. Bare ground and grass can’t support the weight. Over time, your hot tub can start to sink into the ground. At the very least, it probably won’t stay level.

While grass won’t work, you do have several installation options.

Installation Options

You can’t go wrong with a 4” thick concrete slab. Your existing concrete patio or deck might even work, but consult a contractor to make sure it’s able to support the hot tub’s weight. Alternatively, a thick 4-6” layer of compacted gravel works, too.

You can even install your new hot tub inside your home. It’s a wonderful way to enjoy a completely private soak, day or night, all year long. A licensed contractor can advise you about any modifications you’ll need for structural support. Are you planning a home remodel soon?
