Your hot tub is your favorite relaxation tool. But if you’re not using it to amp up your workouts, too, you’re missing out! Not only can your hot tub help with after-workout soreness, using it before you exercise can limber you up and protect your muscles. Timing is everything, though. Here’s how to use your hot tub to improve your workout sessions.
Before You Workout
You know the importance of stretching before you exercise, right? A warm soak in your hot tub before you workout helps similarly. In fact, it helps you get more from stretching. The warm water will increase your circulation and loosen up your muscles and joints. That will make your stretches deeper and more effective. This helps you avoid injury. You can even stretch while you’re in the hot tub if you want.
After You Exercise
Some people think a hot tub soak immediately after their workout will help them avoid soreness. We don’t recommend it, though. Right after you workout you’re dehydrated. Sweating in the warm water of your hot tub will amplify your dehydration. So, make sure to give yourself a chance to rehydrate before you hit your hot tub.
The best time for a hot tub soak is the 24-48 hour window after your exercise session. Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) will have set in and your hot tub can go to work massaging away soreness and increasing blood flow, which speeds up muscle recovery.
Put this one to the test. You’ll find a hot tub soak before you workout will help prevent injury. Plus another soak after DOMS has set in will help your achy muscles recover faster. You’ll be back in the gym, ready for round two quicker than ever before! No hot tub of your own? Nothing is nicer than a private hot tub you can slip into any time you want, day or night!
