How to Enjoy Your Hot Tub with Your Pets

hot tub with your pet

Does anyone love us with as much exuberant joy as our pets? Most pets would do anything to make their owners happy. So is it any wonder you’d like to do the same for him? You’re enjoying a soak in your hot tub and your dog is looking at you with sad eyes, begging to join you in the water. It’s okay to let him join you, right? After all, your social media feed has seen more than a few cute pets looking like they were living their best life in the hot tub. Not so fast. Make sure you follow these guidelines for enjoying your hot tub with your pet.

The Number One Rule

Don’t do it.

We hate to kill the fun (and don’t tell your pet it was us who banned him from the hot tub, please), but hot tubs and pets just don’t mix. Here’s why.

It’s Not Safe for Your Pet

Humans and animals have very different methods of dealing with heat. In fact, we have different heat tolerances. So, while that steamy water allows your muscles to relax, your stress to ease, and feels heavenly in general, it’s way too hot for your pet. The main reason is, most furry animals don’t sweat. For instance, your dog pants to get rid of heat and keep his temperature down. So, while you break a sweat in the hot tub (your body’s method for regulating your internal temperature), your dog would be panting. And he can’t pant enough to handle 102°F heat.

It’s Not Great for Your Hot Tub

Given the chance to hop in the water, your pet would probably do so, but that could damage your hot tub in several ways.

  • Fur that can clog your filters
  • Flea treatments and other things that can contaminate your water
  • Sharp claws that can scratch your shell, cabinet, and controls as he enters and exits the spa

Pet Spa Alternative

If Fido really wants to enjoy the water, set up a small puppy pool next to your hot tub. A plastic kiddie pool is a great option. Your pets will have a great time playing in the water next to you as you relax in your spa. It’s a win-win for everyone!

To keep your furry family member safe, and keep your hot tub in tip-top shape, it’s best to pass on hot-tubbing with your pet. Do you have other questions about hot tub ownership or caring for your spa? We’re here to help! Drop by our store or give us a call
