How to Move a Hot Tub

How to Move a Hot Tub

Packing up and moving can be expensive. On average, hiring movers will run you $2,300 (the cost is nearly double if you’re relocating to a different state) so it’s no wonder many people opt to skip the movers and handle the job themselves. But what if you own a hot tub? Should you hire professionals or is it okay to move it by yourself? You may need to host several hot tub parties to pay your friends for helping you with the heavy lifting, but it’s okay to move it yourself. Here’s how.

Moving Supplies You’ll Need

Before the big day, you’ll need two pallet jacks (so one can push, while one pulls the load — more on that later), two pallets, moving straps, and moving blankets or other protective coverings. If you have any gravel or grass to move across, you’ll need plywood to place on the ground to form a smooth path.

Preparing the Hot Tub

Drain and clean your hot tub. Then, pack up all the accessories, like the cords and electrical units, the pump, heater, blower, and the plumbing unit. It’s best for your equipment if everything is packed separately. Tape off the disconnected electrical wires. If you have any questions about this step, don’t hesitate to give us a call!

How to Load the Hot Tub

When moving day arrives, grab five or more of your buddies to help.

  • Lift the hot tub a few inches off the ground so someone can slide two pallets under it, at opposite ends. If you need to, you can place the hot tub on its side on the pallets, so it can fit through the gate or into the truck.
  • Maneuver the pallet jacks into place and lift the hot tub. This is where having the pallets at opposite ends comes into play. The first pallet jack will be pulling the hot tub down the path, while the rear jack pushes the hot tub. If you don’t have smooth concrete to follow, lay plywood over the grass or gravel to make a flat path.
  • With a ramp, move the hot tub into the truck or trailer and secure it in place.
  • Cover with moving blankets so other furniture and boxes don’t cause damage if they slide into your spa during the trip.

Even though it’s heavy, moving your hot tub to your new home is more straightforward than you were probably expecting.
