At the start of each new year, health and wellness are at the forefront of people’s minds. Would you like to stay flexible and limber as you age? Most of us seem to stiffen up as we get older, but it doesn’t have to be that way. In fact, there are a few enjoyable things you can do to avoid that fate. Here’s how to stay limber after 50.
Warm Water Therapy
Warm water therapy, which you experience every time you take a soak in your hot tub or swim spa, is an excellent defense against stiff joints and muscles. It helps in several ways. The warm water provides hydrostatic pressure that reduces joint inflammation. The heat makes your muscles limber and stretchy and increases blood flow throughout your body. The water and the jets help relieve pain.
Stretching is vital as we age. There’s a lot of truth to that old saying, “If you don’t use it, you lose it.” For more effective stretches, pair your stretching routine with hydrotherapy. Since the warm water makes your muscles limber, the perfect time to stretch is after you enjoy a 15-20 minute soak. You can even stretch and lengthen your muscles in your spa, while you are enjoying the warm water.
Sauna Bathing
The heat in your sauna provides many of the same benefits of hydrotherapy. It penetrates deep into your muscles, making them supple and flexible. The heat increases your circulation which helps both your muscles and joints. Plus, the warmth relieves pain. To amplify the results, try stretching in your sauna (about 15 minutes into your sauna bath when your muscles are warm). Or, you can stretch after you get out of the sauna, or even do yoga inside your Good Health® Sauna.
Whether you enjoy a jetted massage in your spa or like to relax in your sauna (or both!), the main thing is that you find what you love to do and stick with it. For the best results, your muscles need regular heat therapy and regular activity. Need a hot tub, swim spa, or sauna so you can enjoy private bathing any time you want? We can help with that!
