How to Swim for Exercise

Underwater Swimmer

Are you considering a swim spa? Swim spas are low-impact, fun, and very effective at giving you a total body workout. In fact, many people consider it easier to exercise and train in a swim spa than in a traditional swimming pool. This is mainly because swim spas mimic swimming in open water, thanks to the continuous current. There is no need for a flip turn to break your stride.

But whether you swim in an H2X® Fitness Swim Spa or take a dip in a traditional pool, one thing is for certain: swimming is an excellent, low-impact exercise that benefits your entire body! If you choose swimming for your workout, here are a few ways to get the maximum benefit.

Learn to Breathe

That sounds silly, right? You’re reading this, therefore, you breathe. But, most novice swimmers actually don’t know the proper breathing technique for swimming. When you swim, you probably instinctively hold your breath the whole time your face is in the water. Then, when you turn your face to the side, you try to do a full exhale and inhale. That rhythm is impossible. This is why, if you’re a novice swimmer, you soon end up gasping for air and taking a break.

Instead, take a deep breath when your face is up and then slowly exhale while your face is in the water. Then, when you turn your face up to breathe, your lungs will already be emptied and you’ll be ready for that breath.

Enjoy Practicing Different Strokes

According to Livestrong, the butterfly is the best stroke for a total body workout. However, any swimming stroke offers great benefits. Plus, if you enjoy your workout, you’ll stick to your regimen, so that’s a good reason to practice any stroke and do any aquatic exercises you enjoy. If you’d like to improve a certain stroke, or need some tips to improve your technique, check out the Master Spas YouTube channel. It’s packed with tips from triathletes.
