You may have seen a meme or video floating around social media showing a dog or another animal sitting in a hot tub, looking for all the world like he’s living his best life. It’s adorable! But, is it safe? As a pet owner and a hot tub owner, we know you want to do what’s best for your pet (as well as your hot tub). So, before you invite your furry friend into your hot tub, read these guidelines so you can protect them both.
For Your Pet
That steaming 102°F water feels amazing to you. There’s no better way to unwind after a long day at work. But, there’s a key difference between you and your pet. You sweat! You may not notice it while you’re enjoying your soak, but you perspire to keep your core temperature down. Your pet, however, doesn’t perspire. Dogs pant to get rid of body heat and modulate their core temperature. However, panting isn’t enough when it comes to the 100°+ heat of your spa.
Secondly, while spa water products are carefully designed to be safe for humans, they’re not designed for pets. At a minimum, chlorine sanitizers can dry out a pooch’s skin.
For Your Hot Tub
Just like you can bring lotions, sunscreen, and detergents into your water, your dog brings flea treatments and other substances into your hot tub. You carefully balance your spa water and that’s probably the last thing you want throwing it out of balance.
Pets also bring a lot of fur into your hot tub and while they’re in there, shedding is bound to happen. That short pet hair will likely clog your filters.
Finally, your spa has luxury spa seats, a sleek interior, and probably a perfect shell finish. As your pet enters and exits the spa, their claws can do a lot of damage.
As a pet owner, you probably love sharing all types of experiences with your fluffy companion, but your hot tub shouldn’t be one of them. To protect them both, never bring your dog into your hot tub. Plus, make sure to keep your hot tub covered when not in use so a curious pet never enters it when you’re not around.
